June Intelligent Oven

Imagine a device that has a touchscreen, Full HD camera, and is powered by Nvidia's Tegra K1 processor. Oh, and it has built-in Wi-Fi and fetches over-the-air updates automatically. Would you in a million years have guessed we're talking about a smart oven?

Of course you would, because you looked at the headline. Otherwise, few people would let their minds wander to a kitchen appliance, but that's exactly what we're talking about.

Called the June Intelligent Oven, it's a smart oven developed by a team of nearly two engineers, half of which used to work for Apple. Some of the others have experience working at GoPro, FitBit, and Lyft.

But this isn't about the talented team (not directly, anyway), it's about the oven and what it brings to the kitchen table. It's about the size and shape of a toaster oven with a 1 cubic foot capacity, which is big enough to bake a 12-inch pizza or cook a 12-pound bird on turkey day.

The June Intelligent Oven is engineered for precision heating. It sports carbon fiber heating elements that can reach maximum power in less than five seconds, and has high volume convection fans to eliminate cold spots and speed up cooking time by 25 percent.

What's really unique, however, is the use of a Full HD camera to detect commonly cooked foods. Throw a steak in the June Intelligent Oven and it will identify it, weigh it, and read the internal temperature to recommend a cooking program. You can then select a desired doneness, like rare, medium, rare, medium, medium well, or well done.

Weight and temperature are constantly monitored to ensure accurate results, and there's no need to preheat the oven, either.

There's also an accompanying app. You can use it to look up recipes, plan meals, receive alerts when your food is done, and even to view the progress from a live video feed.

As you might have guessed, the catch is the price -- you can reserve a model now by placing a $95 deposit towards the $1,495 promotion price, which runs until July 10. After that, the regular MSRP of $2,995 goes into effect.
